Large Hadron Collider

If you have been as excited about this as I have, you may enjoy seeing the current experimentation on the webcams:

Thinking about RSS

RSS is an interesting idea. Usually I look at Bloglines every few days for months and then forget all about it. Like Bookmarks, it is so easy to add feeds, but then I never get to go and look at them. Often I just look through the feed, tick the ones I want to keep and never go back and look at them. Unfortunately I have never found a feeder that works well with large blogs (eg PostSecret) or gives a really attractive format.

I have a variety of feeds. I think the ones I like best are the science and technology ones and the odd ones. I find Freakanomics great fun because it stretches my brain. I LOVE Cooking for Engineers. I like the Librarians Internet Index New items blog, but most of the blogs for librarians are as dull as... and often badly written. The Shifted Librarian, however, is usually okay.

I think Library blogs that are intended to conver information to the users can be very useful. I have been amazed at how many people go and check out the ones I do for QUT - many more than ever read my newsletters I am sure! The public library ones that give new book lists etc could be really useful.

Libraries from Around the World

Joined Flickr (just took me a while to track down my yahoo account) and then joined the Libraries from Around the World group. Put my picture of Bodrum Library up. http://www.flickr.com/photos/30196130@N07/2828623749/in/pool-48408141@N00

Flickring inandout

So much fun to have an excuse to play with the tools that are usually just used casually! I get intrigued by stuff. Like:

A search of PictureAustralia with tag Brisbane Flickr as source gets 2097 images.
However - the Ourtown group gives 57 and the other PictureAustralia groups 'People, Places and Events' (1499) and 'Re-picture Australia' (2) only give 1501 - so where are the other 539 coming from? Do they come from other sources that are also contributors to Picture Australia but put them up through flickr? Every one I click on gets me through to one of the groups I know about and I will put off the search for another day.

This was my favourite Wynnum photo on Flickr that was CC. It contrasts nicely with the pier on the header I reckon. Taken by Christolakis (http://www.flickr.com/photos/43052603@N00/)

Technorati search for library related blogs.

Interestingly the Technorati subject directory does not have a heading or subheading for libraries. Sigh. It does not have one for Education either, so I guess that shows what blogs are mainly used for!

A search for Library AND local AND history got some really really weird things. Library AND "local history" did better. Interesting that it uses the Google terminology (capitalise the operators). Tried Australia and "local history" and it is more interesting. Thought here are still a lot of false drops - one day I will have the time and energy to find out why the blog about "Jackie Onassis" came through. When I restrict it to blogs there is only one - Yarra Plenty of course. There must be more out there - though Technorati is meant to cover heaps (over 100M). Google blogsearch got 26 (after had limited to history in title) but most of them were totally useless. The art of blog searching is still very basic! I guess the usual algorithms would be useless often with blogs.

At Home

Well the interface works nicely here. I can change it all round and there are more template options. There are formatting buttons and all the proper tabs.

Put a photo of Jetty Number 2 at Wynnum on the header and then had to change the format so it looked okay. I wanted to use one of Ingleston (which was where the library now stands) but that could not be cropped to the right shape. So I will put it here.

Starting out

A new blog. Ah well - there is one born every minute!

Here is the one I made for work at QUT: http://hssswhslibrarian.wordpress.com/

The blogger interface does not appear to be working properly. There are no formatting buttons. I will have to put code in to make that a link
